Snowcoach, Mt Washington New Hampshire

Mt. Washington SnowCoach

Recently we visited the White Mountains in New Hampshire for a snowboarding trip while kids were home from school.   I thought I loved Vermont’s features but my love is squeaking over the line to New Hampshire.  Between our trip in January to the Keene area for snowboarding and now up north, there is so much to offer for outdoor adventures. Enter Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center and their SnowCoach.

The Mt. Washington Auto Road is closed for personal vehicles during the winter months but you can go over 4,200 feet in their SnowCoach, a guided tour to their winter summit by the driver.  Our driver Hans kept the kids entertained with trivia questions, like did you know that Mt. Washington wasn’t named for the president, it was named for when he was General Washington. I answered that one correct first- proud moment.

Our car is somewhere in that lot down there.

The SnowCoach is a 90 minute drive with stop at their winter top for pictures and a little exploring.  You can snow shoe or cross country ski back down from the top or you can have them stop along the way back down.  You can also take the SnowCoach back to the center for more of a guided tour.  We did 2 miles back down and then up and across to the center, the kids loved it.  While going down we were passed by other tours going back up and down.  We had a beautiful day and weather conditions to be able to do this.

 Mother-son on the way down.

If you are heading to Northern New Hampshire (or in Vermont), I highly recommend heading to the SnowCoach, or in the summer/fall drive your own car to the top!   Also in winter: snow tubing, fat biking, cross country skiing and snow shoe trails not on the auto road.  Kids and parent approved!

Covid Procedures:

Social distancing through out the center.  Masks have to be worn in SnowCoach and on property with others.  Tours are down to 6 people from 12 currently, with barrier between driver and back of van.
